Mission

The Mescos

Anglican Church, Arequipa, Peru

We have been supporting Alejandro Mesco, who is pastor of St. Luke's Church in Arequipa, Peru and also in charge of several social projects in that area, as part of our mission giving. Over the last few years we have followed the progress of the new school project and, at last, we have some photos of the work.

The idea behind the school was to offer a holistic education based on Christian ethics to the children in the area.  A fee for this has to be charged, but although the group using this are amongst the poorer economic groups, parents have been willing to make sacrifices so their children can attend.  It is also hoped to reach the parents through this project.  Already it is proving a great success.  The original building was soon full to overflowing (see picture), and more classrooms were needed.

Finally a loan was obtained by the church and a plot of land secured.  The first two classrooms were built and, as funds permit, more can be constructed to allow for expansion.  They were hoping for 180 pupils this year, but the Lord has already sent them 218.  Here is a picture of the new site and classrooms.

The school is also used by 20 children from the church's children's home on the other side of the town.  Transport is a problem, so Alejandro is looking to the Lord to provide a minibus for them, and for the general use of the pupils.

Alejandro writes : 'As you can see, our God is very great and good, and we have seen his word fulfilled "Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy."  Ps. 126:5.  It was not easy to start the work, and we have all suffered to some extent, but I am encouraged to keep going and complete the task.  I plant and the Lord waters with his blessings to bring the growth and scare away the enemy.  Please keep on praying for the school.'
