The Mescos

Dear brothers and sisters,

Our greetings to you all.

As you will know we were surprised in Peru by an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, which shook the cities of Lima , Cañete, Chincha, Ica and Pisco. Reports say that the quake lasted for two minutes, which were two minutes of desperation and terror. There are hundreds of dead and wounded and some thousands of houses destroyed, with families who have lost everything. As Peruvians we are joining together to support our brothers and sisters from the affected towns.

Our diocese is doing some wonderful work helping people in Ica with food, medicine, clothes and other necessities, through our social work department, ‘Comunión Perú’. There are more than 500 dead and more than 1000 wounded in the hospitals.

A group of people from St Lawrence, Alvechurch were with me in Cabanaconde, showing an evangelistic film and we did not feel the effects of the earthquake very much, because we are a thousand miles from Lima . None of our churches in Lima or Arequipa have been damaged and we are all well, including my own family, praise the Lord.

Thank you all for your prayers and messages and support for our country. If anyone wants to send anything, please contact our diocese or our bishop, William Godfrey.

With hugs and much love to you all,

Your servants in Christ,

Doris and Alejandro Mesco

PS  Please pray for bishop William, who is not very well.

On the subject of the burglary that Alejandro and his family suffered not long ago, when burglars took pretty well everything of any value from his house, Alejandro says that they doubt they will be able to recover anything, but God is teaching him not to depend on material things. The children are continuing with their studies, although Alejandro (son) needs to get hold of a keyboard for his daily practising and to finish his studies. Carlos is growing very fast as a person and has been encouraging them all. Doris and Helen are both very nervous since the burglary, worried that it might happen again. Please pray for them.

As for the work in the Colca canyon, it is very hard, with considerable resistance to the gospel, but Alejandro continues to minister there, trusting that the Lord will do the work in his own time.
