28 PCC members were present at the meeting.
1. Worship
The PCC read Psalm 72 together. Erik pointed out that the psalmist is
painting a picture of an ideal king ruling in an idyllic kingdom – the
tenderness displayed is not usual with Eastern kings. No kingdom has ever been
like this except for the kingdom of Christ. Here, we have a taste of the joy,
freedom, community, where His rule is allowed sway. We know that Christ’s
Kingdom will far surpass even the picture given here.
2. Apologies for absence
These were received from Alistair Bolton, Doreen Lynas, Hugo Pollak, Jenny
Reid and Sue Ravalde.
3. Minutes of the Last Meeting
It was proposed by Erik Wilson and seconded by Rowland Cowley that the
minutes of the meeting of 3 September be approved as an accurate record. All
were in favour and the file copy was signed by the Vicar.
4. Matters Arising from the Minutes
Andrew Argyle updated the PCC. Andrew said that more people would be
involved in the next stage of discussion, and to move things forward he
proposed 5 areas of thinking/discussion with a small group working on each of
the 5 areas. This stage would take about 8 weeks. It would all be under the
umbrella of the nave re-ordering working party. The 5 areas are
b) Life Groups
Feedback is that the groups are working well and off to a good start.
c) Director of Music
There were 2 responses to the advert and 1 candidate was suitable for short
listing and was interviewed and appointed. She is Sarah Harrison who has been
appointed on a half time basis and who will live in the house at Queens Road.
Sarah has a degree in music and a certificate in music and theology from
London School of Theology. She has an Anglican background and is experienced
in leading music and choirs. She starts on November 1 and Jenny and Sheila
will be able to ease her into the post. Sarah will work two and a half days to
include Sunday, Monday night and Friday night. She hopes to do some supply
teaching.
5. Correspondence
There was a publicity/appeal leaflet and a letter from the Angel Tree
Project (which is based in Holme House Prison and which enables fathers in
prison to send Christmas gifts to their children.) It was proposed by Jo
Monaghan, seconded by Paul Bury, ‘that, as in previous years, £200 from the
charitable disbursements would be sent to the Angel Tree Project.’ This was
approved – 27 in favour, 1 against.
6. Vicar’s Remarks
Erik announced that from June 2008 St. Barnabas will have a new curate. He
is Nick Barr- Hamilton, currently training for ordination at Oak Hill
Theological College, where his wife, Lucy is training to work with children
and young people. Nick is a wheelchair user, as he is a paraplegic and the
church will need to meet the challenge of full disabled access before he
arrives.
Erik reiterated how much we are going to miss Nick Heaton and reminded
everyone to pray for him through the unsettled period of uncertainty about the
future.
7. Buildings sub-committee Report / 8. Security
Bob Parkin gave this report.
a) The church
Annual service on church and hall alarm system carried out.
Copper was stolen from the choir vestry roof edging. Keith Barker is
pursuing the insurance claim. Anti vandal paint to be applied to the area of
access to the roof. Last weekend another attempt was made on the roof. The
police were alerted by a neighbour and arrived in time to find three people on
the roof whom they arrested. A large amount of copper sheet (not the recent
repair) was already removed but was recovered and has been locked away. One
sheet of corridor felting was removed. There is widespread theft of metal from
churches nationally at the moment. Correspondence has been received from
Ecclesiastical Insurance and the Archdeacon with suggestions for added
security. The Buildings sub-committee are looking into this.
The church notice board has had the protective plastic broken twice in the
last week – possibility of fitting stronger polycarbonate sheet.
High level gutters to be cleaned out. Bob thinks the area where water leaks
in during storms has been identified.
b) The Hall
A new toilet in the disabled toilet has been supplied at the cost of
£286.25.
c) Houses
64 Queens Road has had the alarm system serviced as part of the annual
contract. Cost £68.15. A gas inspection is due and the list of work which
Nigel identified will be shown to a builder this week.
23 Linden Grove has had the shower pull cord switch renewed.
Total Monthly Bills Paid July - September 2007 - £1370.66
Erik thanked Bob warmly for all the work involved. There was a short
discussion about enhanced security and Erik suggested asking the Police Crime
Prevention Officer to come and give advice before any decisions are made.
9. ‘Fresh’ services for young people
This item was introduced by Ste Corner who brought a flyer about the plan.
Ste explained the need for an age appropriate form of worship for 18 – 30
year olds. Since café church/kairos stopped there has been nothing similar. A
number of churches in the Tees Valley each have a small number of people in
this age group and would like to come together to hold a ‘liquid’ worship
event once a month. The first one is planned for 3 November and Ste was asking
the PCC for permission to hold it in St. Barnabas. Tony Hutchings asked who
would have oversight and overall responsibility? Ste said there was a
leadership team of 2 people from each church. It was felt that there should be
line management from one of the clergy. It was suggested by Nick that there
should be a Steering Group. Should the PCC agree to the request it is likely
that the event would be in St. Barnabas every month and feedback would be
given to the PCC in February and a decision reached about the future.
Set up money has already been obtained from the diocese and the group would
seek to provide their own equipment – however there would be a responsible
person for any church equipment used. Nick intends to be present. The
following proposal was made by John Downs and seconded by Pauline Barwick ‘the
PCC notes with interest the proposed ‘Fresh’ initiative and allows the use
of church premises on a provisional basis subject to appropriate oversight, to
include one of the clergy from St. Barnabas, and calls for a report to the PCC
by February 2008.’ The proposal was unanimously approved.
10. Schools’ Worker
Since Laura Henderson moved on there has been no co-ordination of the
Schools’ Ministry and the work so carefully started is in danger of lapsing.
YFC have had no suitable volunteers for this academic year and the Baptist
church is struggling to provide any cover. Ste asked for prayer for the
football ministry. Ste pointed out that Laura was the link into schools for
the information and publicity of the football ministry which is suffering
because of she has not been replaced. Kings Manor and Macmillan have no cover
at all; Andrew Falconer is picking up the links at Linthorpe primary. Cover
overall is patchy and not co-ordinated. Nick highlighted the danger of the
school work in the area losing momentum and stressed again the importance of a
co-ordinator.
Erik suggested that we consider a 15 hour a week post to be funded half
from the charitable Disbursements and half by seeking matched funding. There
is no hope of anything from the Kite Fund but it might be possible to approach
the Archbishop’s Mission Fund if an application was finalised this week. It
is possible that other local parishes might join in. There was interest in
appointing a person who could be attached to St. Barnabas and support the
parish work with children and young people.
Ray Morris proposed the following motion to the PCC and it was seconded by
Erik Wilson. ‘The PCC commends in principle the appointment of a person to
do sessional youth work -
to support the NE1 Goals programme,
to co-ordinate the work in schools,
to serve those schools attended by members of St. Barnabas
The PCC asks the Vicar to liaise with other parishes and churches, and to
report to the PCC at the earliest opportunity.
The PCC agrees to an application to the Archbishop’s Mission Fund and the
seeking of matched funding for any contribution which this parish may make.’
This proposal was unanimously approved.
11. Any Other Notified Business
Bob Parkin asked the PCC to consider whether now that we have agreed on the
Nave Re-ordering it is not time to turn our thoughts to evangelism? Should we
have a sub group of the PCC for evangelism? Erik said that the outreach and
evangelism of the church should be a main agenda item next month.
Nick informed the PCC that he was about to commence the evangelistic course
‘START’ with a group of mums from the Toddler Group and asked for prayer
support for this. It is a pre Alpha course.
12. Date of Next Meeting
