St Barnabas Church, Middlesbrough is seeking to appoint an Organ Scholar, for the academic year 2020-21. The position offers experience and training in organ playing and choir training and as a musician more generally. The successful applicant will: receive a bursary of £300 towards organ tuition; be able to use the recently restored organ; receive mentoring and support from experienced musicians and have the opportunity to earn fees for services. Applicants need to possess good keyboard skills and be willing to learn the organ. They should be in sympathy with the Christian faith and be ready to work as part of a team. Aims of Scholarship

  • Give someone experience and training in church music, for their general benefit, but this could be especially valuable for someone hoping to pursue a career in church music or music generally in the future
  • support and develop the 9.30 am service music at St Barnabas

Job Specification

  • be in sympathy with the Christian faith
  • Attend 930 service every week (a non-eucharistic service, with communion once a month) and other services by agreement
  • possess good keyboard skills and be willing support worship using both organ and piano. Applicants will also be encouraged to develop skills in training and conducting the choir.
  • willingness to work as part of a team

The Organ

  •  a 3 manual pipe organ, recently completely overhauled with new digital action. Swell and choir are both separately enclosed. Usual couplers, registration pistons, draw stops. Ideal instrument to lead congregational singing as well as accompany choir and soloists. Has various solo stops which extend the character of the instrument.

 Timetable for Appointment

  • Interview candidates July/August 2020
  • Organ scholar begins role in September 2020
  • Organ scholar steps down in June 2021
